Along with the Black road builders, there were Black medical professionals, Black mechanics, Black truckers, Black cooks, laundrymen etc.  In other words, the mountains, rivers and valleys of India, Burma and China were filled with Black GIs.

African American lives were lost on the road either through accidents, malaria or sniper bullets, insects and wild animals.  It is said that “Negro” gravesites instead of mile markers were the distinguishing features of The Road’s landscape.  A marker might read, “Here lies Sgt. Smith, dead from a sniper bullet. Mile 99.”  Thus the phrase, “A Man a Mile.”
